Offered in this lot is the official poster of the 1942 South American Football Championship. The six-game round-robin tournament took place in Montevideo’s Estadio Centenario, with the host nation claiming their eighth title in the tournament now called the Copa America. Uruguay were undefeated in the tournament, scoring 21 goals and surrendering only two. La celeste clinched their victory with a 1-0 win over Argentina at the Centenario, winning on Bibiano Zapirain’s 57th minute strike.
This offered poster measures 20 x 28 inches and shows a soccer player in a red turtleneck holding a brown ball in front of a net. Red and black text on the poster reads “Uruguay Turismo 1942” and “XIV Campeonato Sudamericano de Football”. “G. Bonelli” is printed on the poster as well and a “Comision Nacional de Turismo Uruguay” stamp is located on the poster. This stunning poster is a fantastic piece of early Copa America history!
