Ernie Pyle was one of America’s greatest war correspondents, reporting with great distinction from the front lines of World War II. His dedication to his craft and service cost him his life, as he was killed by machine gun fire on the island of Iejima, a small rock outcropping near the larger island of Okinawa. Pyle, a civilian, was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart for his service in the Pacific.
This check, for the value of $25.00, is made out to the Bernalillo County Tuberculosis Association. The check is dated November 30th, 1944, just a few short months before Pyle’s untimely death at the age of 44. He signed the bottom of this check in black pen. The check, which is in excellent condition save for cancellation punches, has been encapsulated and graded a GEM MINT 10 by PSA/DNA (83939223).
