Straight outta Compton! Before his sterling NFL career, before he shattered Pacific Coast Conference records at Washington, "The King" starred for the undefeated Compton Tartars on a team that included fellow future HOFer Joe Perry and future Olympic gold medalist Sim Iness. Compton won the 1948 Little Rose Bowl (later known as the Junior Rose Bowl) by a score of 48-14 over Duluth. Presented here is McElhenny's distinctively elegant and quite stunning reward: A Herff Jones sterling-silver, size 11 ring crowned by a beautiful 10K-gold top featuring Compton's red-enamel "C" inlaid on a raised-relief football. Art Deco-like shank designs read "1948" and the inner band is engraved "H.E.M." Wonderful NM condition. An accompanying 2003 purchase LOA reads in part, "In 1948 McElhenny busted through defensive lines gaining 1,184 yards and scoring 17 touchdowns, while averaging nine yards per carry to lead California's Compton Jr. College to the National Junior College Title."
