The 1950 Philadelphia Phillies won the National League pennant by two games over the Brooklyn Dodgers. Nicknamed the "Whiz Kids" because of the youth of their roster, the Phillies of the new decade were the youngest in the National League, and their potential would resonate throughout the 1950’s. The Phillies burst onto the scene in 1950 taking all others by surprise in the National league and won the pennant and played against the New York Yankees dynasty in the World Series.
This scarce grey colored flannel was worn Benny Bengough, who was best known for his time as a player with the New York Yankees during the 1920’s including being a member of the 1927 World Series Champion juggernaut that featured Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Murderer’s row. The jersey dates to the 1950 World Series season, one of the most memorable seasons in Philadelphia Phillies franchise history and was donned by the team’s skipper who ultimately led the team to the World Series by utilizing his bullpen down the final stretch of the season to secure the National League pennant over the Dodgers. The jersey has an articulately embroidered “Phillies” script logo across the chest in red chenille stitching on white felt border backing, the name "Bengough" is chain-stitched in black on a gray strip tag in the collar. On the left front tail are a "Wilson 44" label, a wash tag and a gray strip tag bearing the year, "50," chain-stitched in black. Bengough’s number “11” is sewn on the back in the same red chenille stitching on a white felt border backing. The jersey is original as issued with no alterations. Heavy wear is displayed throughout, including light-red coloration under the armpits resulting from bleeding of the club's maroon undershirts. There are very few 1950 Pennant winning Philadelphia Phillies game worn jerseys known in existence and the historical relic has comes with a LOA from MEARS (316782), who have graded this jersey its highest grade of A10.
