When Brazil hosted the 1950 World Cup, it was widely assumed that the Selecao would dominate the competition and win their first global title. In the tournament final at the cavernous Maracana Stadium, Uruguay’s diminutive winger Alcides Ghiggia scored the deciding goal of La Celeste’s 2-1 win in front of nearly 200,000 shocked Brazilians. This was Uruguay’s second World Cup title in two World Cup appearances, and their fourth global title of the 20th century.
Offered in this lot is a 1950 World Cup fixture card from the estate of 1950 World Cup hero Alcides Ghiggia. The fixture card shows the results from the first of the tournament’s two “round robin” group stages, with the final group of Brazil, Sweden, and Uruguay listed below the results. Printed on the bottom of the back of this fixture card is “Homanagem de Alberto Dourado Lopes Candidato Ao Senado Federal Aos Deportistas da Copa do Mundo”. The remaining text on the fixture card is printed in Portuguese as well. This item measures 3.5 x 5.5 inches and is in good condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
