This 1950 World Cup pennant originates from the estate of the giant-killing Uruguayan right winger Alcides Ghiggia. Ghiggia led Uruguay to a monumental 2-1 defeat of Brazil at the cavernous Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro in the final match of the 1950 World Cup, assisting Juan Alberto Schiaffino on Uruguay’s first goal before breaking the deadlock in the 79th minute with an incisive low shot past Brazilian netminder Moacir Barbosa. This is regarded as one of the biggest upsets in the history of global sports, with the appellation “Maracanaço”, or “The Agony of the Maracana”, assigned to the historic goal. This offered pennant measures approximately 5.5 x 12 inches at its widest dimensions. Printed on the pennant is “IV Campeonato Mundial de Futebol” and “Junho 1950 Brasil”, as well as the 1950 World Cup logo. This banner is in fair condition and is a stunning relic from one of the most important games in World Cup history. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
