The Arkansan hurler Dizzy Dean was one of the greatest righties of his generation, winning 150 games in an all-too-brief career. Dean won 30 games for the 1934 Gashouse Gang St. Louis Cardinals, winning the 1934 National League MVP trophy and leading the Cardinals to a masterful seven-game defeat of the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. Dean pitched the clinching game of the series, throwing a complete game shutout as the Cardinals blanked the Tigers 11-0. Dean pitched until 1941 before coming out of retirement to pitch one start for the St. Louis Browns in 1947 while serving as the team’s broadcaster. Dean threw four scoreless innings and hit a single before pulling a hamstring rounding first base, ending his professional baseball career for good. “The Great Man” was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953.

Offered here is a signed agreement between Dean and George Weiss of the New York Yankees for Dean’s services as the Yankees broadcaster for the 1950 MLB season. Dean was an affable, if eccentric, voice in the broadcast booth, enjoying a career in broadcasting off and on through the 1960’s. The deal offered by the Yankees was for $20,000, with a $25,000 one-year option for the 1951 season. Dean has signed his name on this agreement as “Jerome H Dean” in black pen. Weiss has also signed the document in black pen. This item comes with a LOA from JSA (Z67496).
