Uruguayan midfielder and team captain Obdulio Varela was presented with this quadruple world championship medal after leading la celeste to a shocking and historic victory over Brazil in the 1950 FIFA World Cup Finals. Varela, Juan Alberto Schiaffino, and Alcides Ghiggia all played huge roles in defeating the heavily favored Brazilians in Rio de Janeiro, forever altering the history of soccer in South America. This was Uruguay’s second World Cup title after their win at the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930, with the 1924 and 1928 Olympic gold medals serving as the first and second world championships for Uruguay.

This offered medal features “Uruguay Campeon” and “1924 1928 1930 1950” etched in high relief on the front of the medal, along with a soccer cleat kicking a globe. Etched on the back of this medal is “Obdulio J. Varela” and “Rio de Janeiro 1950”. This historic and rare medal comes with a letter of provenance.
