Obdulio Varela and Schubert Gambetta were key figures in Uruguay’s historic triumph over Brazil in the 1950 World Cup Finals. Varela, the team captain and an outstanding holding midfielder, organized a sturdy Uruguayan back line that surrendered but a single goal to the previously unstoppable Brazilian offense. Playing alongside Varela was the right halfback Gambetta, whose adept marking of the Brazilian stars Zizinho and Ademir de Menezes kept Uruguay in the game for the whole 90 minutes. This photograph also shows Uruguay’s head coach Juan López Fontana and an unidentified member of the Uruguayan Football Association. The picture was produced by Testoni Foto and measures 6.75 x 4.5 inches. A Testoni stamp and minimal gray pencil handwriting are present on the reverse side of this photograph. The photograph originates from the estate of Obdulio Varela. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
