This stunning polychrome on silk 1950 World Cup banner originates from the estate of Uruguayan World Cup hero Alcides Ghiggia. Ghiggia, a diminutive attacking winger, assisted on Uruguay’s first goal and scored the second for La Celeste in their seminal 2-1 defeat of Brazil at the Maracanã Stadium. This iconic victory gave the Uruguayans their second World Cup title in as many tries, with the Brazilians condemned to accept second place accolades in their home country. Ghiggia, a star domestically for Peñarol, earned a big-money move to A.S. Roma in Italy after the World Cup, playing for the giallorossi over 200 times and earning a spot in the club’s Hall of Fame.
This banner measures approximately 29 x 32 inches. Printed on the banner in gold lettering is “1950 Campeonato Mundial de Futebol” around an image of the Maracanã Stadium. Flags from the competing World Cup nations are also printed on the banner. Additionally, the crests of Brazilian soccer teams Flamengo, Fluminense, Vasco de Gama, Corinthians, Palmeiras, Sao Paulo, Botafogo, and Portuguesa are also printed on this banner. This banner is in good condition. TThis item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
