Uruguay’s World Cup hero Alcides Ghiggia was presented with this silver medal after leading La Celeste to a shocking upset victory over a heavily favored Brazil outfit at the 1950 World Cup in Rio de Janeiro. Ghiggia assisted on Uruguay’s first goal of the 1950 World Cup final, setting up Juan Alberto Schiaffino with an incisive cross in the second half, before scoring the final goal of Uruguay’s 2-1 win at the Maracanã Stadium with just over 10 minutes left in the pitched contest.

This offered medal is silver and measures approximately 1.25 inches in diameter. The front of the medal features a high relief etching of the Maracanã Stadium in front of the Rio de Janeiro landscape. “Estadio Municipal” and “Rio de Janeiro” are also etched on the front of the medal. The reverse side of the medal is etched with a lower leg kicking a soccer ball, as well as “IV Campeonato Mundial de Futebol” and “Brasil 1950”. Etched on the sides of the medal are “Alcides Ghiggia”, “Gazola”, and “Campeon del Mundo”. This historic medal is in good condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
