After winning the very first World Cup in 1930, the Uruguayan men’s national soccer team made their second trip to the FIFA World Cup in the 1950 edition of soccer’s most famous tournament. Held nearby in Brazil, the Uruguayan team was well-regarded by pundits but still deemed a ranking below the free-flowing Brazilian selecao. In the tournament final at the historic Maracana Stadium, La Celeste shocked the universe with a 2-1 win over the host country in front of nearly 200,000 rabid Brazilian fans. The slight winger Alcides Ghiggia scored the winning goal, his fourth of the tournament, to seal Uruguay’s fourth major international title.

Offered in this lot is a special edition of the magazine El Mundial de Futbol originating from the Alcides Ghiggia estate. This magazine is filled with photographs and analysis from the 1950 World Cup, as well as soccer statistics from a host of international tournaments. It was published in Montevideo as one of 25,000 first edition examples of El Mundial de Futbol. Due to the origin of the magazine, its content is written entirely in Spanish. The back cover of this magazine shows a team photograph of the 1950 Uruguay XI, including Ghiggia and the team captain Obdulio Varela. This item is in good condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
