The legendary Uruguayan winger Alcides Ghiggia was issued this Uruguay pennant by the Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol (AUF) for the 1950 World Cup in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Ghiggia, at the time playing for Uruguayan giants Peñarol, scored the winning goal in the final game of the 1950 World Cup at the Maracana Stadium, slotting a low shot past Brazilian goalkeeper Moacir Barbosa to clinch a 2-1 win for La Celeste. Expecting a cross, Barbosa was caught flat-footed by the nimble Ghiggia, leaving his near post open for Uruguay’s hero to strike. This offered pennant is white with blue stripes, resembling the flag of Uruguay. A red sash across the pennant is embroidered in white with “A.U. de F.” The pennant measures 21 x 10 inches at its widest dimensions and is in fair condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
