Offered is the 1952-53 Robert V. Geasey Memorial Award presented to LaSalle College’s Tom Gola by the Philadelphia Basketball Writers Association as the Nation’s Outstanding College Player. The 26-inch high gold metal and white plastic trophy incorporates a 7½ -inch gold metal figure of a basketball player with his right arm raised high over his head with a basketball in his hand. That figure is mounted on a 13-inch gold metal column, which itself is mounted on a 6 x 8 x 9-inch white plastic base. The front of the base features a 3½ x 6½-inch gold metal plaque engraved with the legend “Robert V. Geasey Memorial Award Nations Outstanding College Player Tom Gola La Salle PBWA 1952-53” in black. Gola played at LaSalle from 1952 through 1955, and was a four-time All-District and All-State player, a four-time All-America selection, a three-time Consensus All-American, won the 1952 NIT championship and was the NIT Co-MVP, won the 1954 NCAA Championship and was the tournament MVP and the College Player of the Year in 1954. He finished his collegiate career as the NCAA’s all-time rebounding leader with 2,201 (a record which still stands) and scored 2,462 points. LaSalle compiled a 102-19 overall record in Gola’s four seasons. His #15 was retired by LaSalle, and he was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016.
