When Sports Illustrated put out their first ever issue in 1954, it wasn't Mantle, Aaron or Mays who graced the cover but Eddie Mathews. He came up with the Braves in 1952 where he hit 25 home runs. In '53 he completely dominated the National League with 47 home runs, making him an instant star. This was the first of nine seasons of 30 or more homers in a career that take him to both the Hall of Fame and 500 Home Run Club. The Braves slugger used this bat during that 1953 season that made him. The Hillerich & Bradsby M162 model bat is un-cracked and shows great game use. The barrel has many ball marks and stitch impressions along with bat rack paint streaks. There is some checking on the back barrel from repeated ball contact. The handle has a light coat of pine tar and the knob end has a chip in it. It's not often you come across a true gamer from a member of the 500 Home Run Club - and this one is significant in that it is from only his second season in the majors.
