The Italian-Argentine soccer player Raimundo Orsi was presented with this trophy on the 20th anniversary of his 1934 World Cup title. Orsi, a left-footed winger and striker, began his soccer career in Argentina, playing for the national team and Buenos Aires powerhouse Club Atletico Independiente. A three-time Argentine champion with Independiente, Orsi won the 1927 Copa America and a silver medal at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, with his European exposure leading to a lucrative transfer to Italy’s leading club team, Juventus of Turin. Orsi played seven excellent years for “The Old Lady”, scoring 77 times in 177 league appearances while switching his international allegiance to his adopted country. Orsi was handed a crucial role with Italy in the 1934 World Cup, held on Italian soil, as the outside left forward for gli azzurri alongside the immortal Giuseppe Meazza. Orsi started the tournament final against Czechoslovakia, scoring the tying goal for Italy with only nine minutes left in regulation play before Bologna’s Angelo Schiavio put Italy ahead for good with a goal in the 95th minute.

This trophy was presented to Orsi by the Argentine President Juan Domingo Peron in 1954, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Avellanada native’s World Cup triumph. This trophy measures approximately 21.5 inches tall, with the measurement increasing to 28.5 inches when the trophy is placed on its wooden pedestal. The mouth of the trophy measures approximately 9 inches in diameter. The pedestal comes in two pieces and features a groove on the top for the trophy to be placed on. Etched on the trophy is “Premio Presidente de la Nacion Argentina ‘General Juan Peron’”, “A Raimondo Orsi Campeon del Mundo Italia 1934”, and “Agosto 14 de 1954”. This trophy exhibits some wear from age but is in otherwise great condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
