Fresh of his 1951 National League Rookie of the Year and 1954 MVP awards, Willie Mays signed this contract extension with Topps Chewing Gum. The date that is handwritten in blue pen is “9-11-55” with “WILLIE H. MAYS” typed on the “PLAYER’S NAME” line. The contract reads “It is agreed that the term of the agreement between me and Topps Chewing Gum, Incorporated, dated “May 28, 1956” is hereby extended for a period equal to the already expired portion of the term of our agreement, on the same terms and conditions therein contained. This extension agreement shall be governed by the laws of the State of New York.” Mays signed his name in bold blue pen on the “Player’s Signature” line and has been counter-signed by an agent of the Topps Chewing Gum, Incorporated. The contract measures 8 ½ x 11 inches and displays corner and edge wear, along with some staple holes on the top left. The contract displays slight toning, but is in otherwise good condition with the typed print still displaying boldly. A great early-career signature from one of baseball’s all-time great players and this item comes with a STICKER ONLY from PSA/DNA (M01166) for the signature.
