The 1956 NFL season ended on December 30th at Yankee Stadium, with the New York Giants taking on the Chicago Bears in the NFL’s 24th championship game. The Giants, led by a cadre of Hall of Famers including Frank Gifford, Andy Robustelli, Alex Webster, and Sam Huff, ran roughshod over the Bears, winning by a score of 47-7. Conditions at the game were brutal, as below-freezing temperatures created a slick, icy field. The Giants, who boasted the assistant coaches Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry, played the game in white sneakers instead of cleats, giving them a crucial advantage in grip and maneuverability over the Bears. This was the Giants fourth NFL title, and their last until Super Bowl XXI.
