After a 10-season Hall of Fame career, Jackie Robinson hung up his cleats following the 1956 season. The Brooklyn Dodgers had traded Robinson to their rivals New York Giants for Dick Littlefield and cash, but unbeknownst to the Dodgers, Robinson had already agreed to join “Choc full O’ Nuts” coffee company as an executive by retiring from baseball and thus nullifying the trade.

Presented is a 7 x 8 ¾ inch black and white photograph of Jackie Robinson in front of the Ebbets Field scoreboard for the final time. Robinson is shown with this left arm pointing up with the partial scoreboard in the background. Robinson’s number 42 is in the “AT BAT” area with “344 FT.” and “A real hit” displayed as well. Robinson is dressed in a shirt and tie with a heavy coat and looking off-camera.

The back of the photograph has “JAN 9-1957” stamped in red with a 5 x 3 ¼ inch caption paper that reads: FAREWELL APPEARANCE BROOKLYN, N.Y.: FIERY DODGER HERO JACKIE ROBINSON, WHO’S FINISHED WITH BASEBALL, POINTS TO THE EBBETS FIELD SCOREBOARD, WHERE THE NUMBER 42 WHICH HE MADE FAMOUS IN HIS TEN-YEAR MAJOR LEAGUE CAREER STILL APPEARS IN THE “AT BAT” SIGN HERE JANUARY 7TH. JACKIE MADE THE LAST OUT IN THE FINAL GAME OF THE WORLD SERIES HERE ON OCTOBER 10TH. ROBINSON PAID A FAREWELL VISIT TO THE BALL PARK WHERE HE MADE BASEBALL HISTORY TO PICK UP HIS GEAR. CREDIT (UNITED PRESS PHOTO) 1/7/57 KG. The photograph is in overall good condition with only minor edge and corner wear and some minor warping on the left center edge. This is a tremendous photograph showing Robinson shortly after he retired from baseball.
