Most current Yankee fans remember 11 years ago, when the “old” Yankee Stadium was torn down and the new, modern Stadium was built across the street. But, older, hardcore Yankee fans remember the “old, old” stadium, built in 1923, host to 19 Yankee World Series titles and where Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio and Mantle used to roam the vast greens and browns of their diamond and dominate their competition. There was never a franchise and team so synonymous with each other than the New York Yankees and the venerable Yankee Stadium.
However, this character and championship driven stadium was in need of a facelift, and in 1973, the Stadium was reduced to its shell and given the renovation of a lifetime, complete with luxury boxes, more comfortable seating, and generously larger player locker room areas, the area players spend the most time in when at the Stadium. One thing missing from this renovation was the original team photos, which used to be on display at the “old, old” Yankee Stadium – known as Yankee Stadium 1.
This offered photograph features the official team photo of the 1958 World Series Champion squad. All of the players and coaches are decked out in their sterling white pinstriped Yankees’ uniforms. In the front row from left to right are Whitey Ford, Enos Slaughter, Mickey Mantle, Bobby Shantz, Yogi Berra, Frank Crosetti, Casey Stengel, Jim Turner, Ralph Houk, Ryne Duren, Tony Kubek, Bill Skowron and Gil McDougald. The second row has Gus Mauch, Norm Siebern, Elston Howard, Art Ditmer, Don Larsen, John Kucks, Jerry Lumpe, Zack Monroe and Bob Turley. The third row has Tom Sturdivant, Darrell Johnson, Andy Carey, Hank Bauer, Virgil Trucks, Duke Maas, Marv Throneberry, Murry Dickson, Bobby Richardson and John James. The two batboys, Pat Ferry and Lou Perricelli, are seated in front of the first row. The black and white photograph is 16 x 33 inches and is mounted on a thin wood backing which is placed between a black painted wood frame that measures 19 ½ x 36 inches. A 1 x 5-inch silver plated signed is screwed into the black wood frame that reads “1958 WORLD CHAMPIONS”. The photo is in good overall condition and is detached from the wood frame. The frame itself has several scratches and slight chipping on some of the edges and corners. A great display piece from arguably the most historic venue in baseball history.
