This offered Kansas City Athletics cap was worn by Roger Maris during the 1958 MLB season, his first season with the Athletics. Maris played in 99 games and hit 19 home runs for Kansas City in 1958. In the late 1950s, Kansas City frequently traded their best young players to the New York Yankees – a practice which led them to be referred to as the Yankees' "major league farm team"– and Maris was no exception. This cap was sourced from Garver, an All-Star pitcher and 20-game winner. Garver has signed the underside of the brim of this hat in black marker. The number “35” is handwritten in black marker above Garver’s signature. The number “35” was issued to three players in 1958 by the A’s – Roger Maris, Dave Melton and Jim Small. Maris played 99 games, while Jim Small played in only 2 games and Melton saw action in only 2 games as well. The cap is navy, with a red and white “A” embroidered on the front. A Wilson tag is sewn on the sweatband of this size 7 1/8 cap. This cap displays excellent game use and comes with a LOA from J.T. Sports, who have attributed use of this hat to Roger Maris and a LOA from JSA (BB84587) for Garver’s signature.
