Manoel dos Santos, the soccer player commonly known as Garrincha, rivals Pele in terms of stature and repute in his native country of Brazil. The slight winger is regarded as the greatest dribbler in the sport, with his uneven legs and showman’s flair resulting in an untold number of embarrassed defenders. Garrincha won a pair of World Cups with Brazil, contributing to a team win in 1958 before almost single-handedly leading Brazil to the 1962 FIFA World Cup title. Brazil never lost a game with both Garrincha and Pele on the pitch.

With Pele injured in 1962, Brazil depended on Garrincha to bring the Jules Rimet Trophy the short distance from Chile to Brazil. All four of the Botafogo star’s goals came in the knockout rounds, as Garrincha netted a pair against England in the quarterfinals and two more in the semifinals against Chile. In the final match, Brazil defeated Josef Masopust and a strong Czechoslovakia side to win their second World Cup title. Garrincha was simply untouchable during the World Cup, with his four goals enough to tie for the Golden Ball. Garrincha went on to earn 50 caps with Brazil, scoring 12 goals for the national team and appearing in three World Cups.

Offered in this lot is the Jules Rimet Trophy presented to Garrincha for winning the 1962 FIFA World Cup. The trophy is approximately 11 inches tall with a 3 ¼ x 3-inch base and displays the goddess Nike standing atop a stone pedestal. This Jules Rimet Trophy comes in the original wood presentation box that measures 17 ½ x 11 ½ x 5 inches. The trophy is accompanied by a LOA from the family of Manoel “Garrincha” dos Santos.
