In 1962, the San Francisco Giants finished the regular season tied for first place in the National League with the Los Angeles Dodgers. A three game series to decide the NL pennant winner ensued, with the Giants easily handling the Dodgers 8-0 in the first contest. Game 2 was a tough pill to swallow for the former Polo Grounds residents, as the Dodgers scored a walk off 8-7 win. The Giants took their revenge in Game 3, scoring four runs in the top of the ninth to win 6-4 and advance to the Fall Classic. Although they lost to the New York Yankees in seven games, the Giants proved that they could thrive on the West Coast.
Willie Mays and Orlando Cepeda handled offensive duties for the Giants, while Juan Marichal and Jack Sanford combined to anchor the pitching staff. Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry made his debut in ’62, and Willie “Stretch” McCovey hit 20 home runs in only 91 games.
25 members of the ’62 Giants have signed this Official National League Warren Giles sphere. Manager Al Dark and Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda have signed the sweet spot. Other Hall of Fame signatures include Mays, McCovey, Marichal, and the rookie Perry. The remaining signatures include Stu Miller, Chuck Hiller, Billy O’Dell, Jose Pagan, Tom Haller, Felipe Alou, Bobby Bolin, Ernie Bowman, Mike McCormick, Joe Pignatano, Don Larsen, Jim Davenport, Harvey Kuenn, Jim Duffalo, and several more. The signatures have been written in black and blue pen. This item comes with a LOA from Steve Grad of Beckett Authentication (A81859).
