Former outfielder Al Spangler spent three seasons with the newly formed Houston Colt 45’s from 1962-1964, before the team was renamed the Houston Astros to start the 1965 season. Despite the team’s struggles as an expansion team, Spangler batted a solid .270 in those three seasons, playing in all three outfield positions. During the 1963 season, Spangler had a solid .281 batting average during that campaign.

Offered is this button-down Houston Colt 45’s home jersey worn by Spangler during the 1963 season, the team’s second season in the Majors. This jersey features “Colts” sewn on the front in orange and navy chenille with a navy chenille revolver facing left and meeting up with the “C” in “Colt”. The jersey was manufactured by MacGregor and is a size 44, with the green manufacturer’s tag sewn on the inside back collar. The back of the jersey has Spangler’s number “21” sewn on in blue and orange tackle twill. There are portions of the “2” and “1” where there is loose stitching, but the numbers are still fully intact. Like the flannel jerseys of that era, the sleeves are shorter and this particular jersey has blue stains on the underarms, which would be consistent with blue ink transferring from a navy undershirt and playing the hot Houston summers at the original outdoor stadium – Colt Stadium. Spengler has signed his name in black marker on the front of the jersey and inscribed “Best Wishes.” This jersey displays moderate to heavy game use with dirt and sweat stains present and the jersey itself exhibits toning. This jersey comes with a LOA from Sports Investors (181619A3) for the game use and a LOA from Steve Grad of Beckett Authentication for the signature.
