This bat dates to Roger Maris’ transitional season, 1963. As every baseball fan knows, Maris had broken Ruth’s single season home run record in 1961, much to the chagrin of hardcore fans who wanted it to remain in Ruth’s possession or let it be Mickey Mantle who did it. Bowing under all the pressure, Maris “slumped” to just 33 homers in ’62 and followed that up with a 1963 that was riddled with injuries. Still, the hardworking man from South Dakota put his head down and finished the season with a respectable .269 with 27 homers in 90 games. Maris would emerge from this transitional season surer of himself and go on to have a career resurrection of sorts, leading the Yankees to the World Series followed by two seasons in St. Louis where he would win another World Championship. Maris’ 1963 Hillerich & Bradsby B220 model bat shows outstanding use with a crack in the upper handle to the center brand. The crack had once been secured with tape but has since been removed and is now secured with finishing nails. Numerous ball marks are visible on the left, right and back barrel and cleat imprints are visible on the left barrel. Blue and green bat rack paint streaks are present. The model number “B220” is stamped into the knob and “Maris” is written in black marker. This bat comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (1B16938) for the game use and has been graded a solid GU 8.5 and a LOA from Charlie Sheen stating that this bat was in his personal collection.
