There aren’t many other players that exemplify Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers more than Ray Nitschke. For a decade-and-a-half the middle linebacker anchored the Packer’s defense as they won five NFL Championships and the first two Super Bowls. This set of shoulder pads have been authenticated to the 1966 season for the Green Bay Packers, who would go on to win the very first Super Bowl. In the first edition of the most-watched sporting event in North America, Nitschke recorded six tackles and sack as Green Bay dominated the Chiefs, 35-10. Ray Nitschke was one of 11 Packers in the game that afternoon who would go on to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. These game used Rawlings CP56 model shoulder pads show heavy use and a white piece of athletic tape bearing the year “66” is found on the right shoulder, as was common with Packers equipment from this period and identifies the year these pads were used. The pads still bear all the appropriate factory stamping and the chest lacing is still present. Perspiration stains are present along with wear to the fabric pad covering and toning is found throughout. Completing this museum-worthy piece is a strong vintage Ray Nitschke signature in black marker, believed by MEARS to have been added in the 1970s. An iconic piece of Green Bay Packers memorabilia worn during the very first Super Bowl season. The shoulder pads come with an LOA from MEARS (317121) for the 1966 game use and an LOA from JSA (BB38889) for Nitschke’s signature.
