Widely regarded as baseball’s true home run king, Hank Aaron hit 755 home runs over his illustrious 23-year career. Even 40 years after his retirement, Aaron still holds numerous records, including most career RBI and total bases. Aaron, the 1957 National League MVP, was selected to 21 All-Star teams. He finished his career with an incredible 3,771 hits, 2,297 RBI, and a .305 batting average. Aaron was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982, on his first ballot.
The late Hall of Famer added 29 home runs to his soon-to-be record-setting home run total during the 1968 season with the Atlanta Braves. Aaron appeared in 160 games where he batted a solid .287 and added 86 RBI to his still record-holding total. Presented here is one of the bats used by Hammerin Hank during the 1968 season. This Adirondack 63A model bat displays outstanding game use with a crack on the handle that has been repaired. The lettering on the center brand and barrel displays some flaking, which have been corrected and stabilized. There are ball marks and stitch impressions present on the barrel. A moderate coating of pine tar is on the handle and Aaron’s number “44” is visible on the top of the barrel in faded blue marker. The knob has the bat’s model number “63A” stamped and although not legible, there are vestiges of a knob notation (presumably Aaron’s number “44”) that can be seen. This bat comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (1B24972) for the game use and note in their LOA “The original owner of the bat, a vendor at Atlanta’s Fulton County Stadium, has presented an oral history for the bat that includes it’s acquisition from Hank Aaron after he cracked the bat during batting practice”.
