During the 1970 through 1972 seasons, all-time hits leader Pete Rose continued his assault on National League pitching. In two of those three seasons, Rose led the National League in hits with 205 in 1970 and 198 in 1972. 1971 wasn’t too bad either as Rose added 192 to his career total. While Rose and the Reds were unable to navigate their way through the NL playoffs, they were laying the groundwork for the World Series champion Big Red Machine teams of the mid-1970’s.

Offered here is Rose’s Hillerich & Bradsby S222 model bat that has been dated to those 1970-72 seasons where he averaged a 198 hits per season. As would be expected from a Rose gamer, this bat displays outstanding game use and is un-cracked. There are ball marks, red ink marks and slight checking or grain swelling from repeated ball contact present on the barrel. The bat’s model number “S222” is stamped on the knob, while the mid-handle has a light coating of pine tar. Rose’s number “14” is handwritten in red marker on the knob. Rose has added his signature to the barrel in black marker, with the inscription above “To Cub, Best Wishes”, completing this impressive early-career Rose gamer. This bat comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (1B18273) for the game use and has been given a very high grade of GU 9.5.
