By 1976, New York Yankees backstop Thurman Munson had established himself as the premier catcher in the American League. His decade-long rivalry with Boston’s Carlton Fisk pushed Munson to higher and higher career accomplishments, culminating in his 1976 season. The summer Munson clobbered AL pitching at a .302 clip and his 105 RBI combined with his clubhouse leadership dragged the Yankees back into the post season after more than ten years absence. Munson hit .435 against the Royals in the ALCS and then a God-like .529 in the World Series. His tremendous output and behind the scenes leadership earned him the 1976 AL Most Valuable Player Award. The next two seasons saw the Yankees cruise to back-to-back World Championships, with Thurman Munson calling the shots from behind the plate.

This offered New York Yankees jersey was one of the first jerseys worn by Munson during his MVP 1976 season. This classic pinstriped home button-down jersey has a restored interlocking “NY” sewn on the upper left chest in navy tackle twill. This jersey has been sourced to former Tacoma Yankees General Manager Stan Naccarato. It was common practice in that era to have jerseys sent to the minor league affiliates for use and the Tacoma Yankees were the AAA farm team of the Yankees in the 1970’s. This jersey is a Wilson size 42 with the Wilson tag and the Yankees’ “76 1” tag sewn on the bottom front left tail. The inner placket is lined with an off-white soft material for player comfort and a tag sewn on the inside back collar reads “Munson”. The back of the jersey has Munson’s number “15” professionally restored from the “25” it was switched to when sent to Tacoma. This jersey displays outstanding game use displaying signs of being washed several times. A great Munson gamer from his MVP season. This comes with a LOA from Sports Investors Authentication (200611E1), plus a LOA from Bill Henderson, who restored this jersey.
