By 1976, New York Yankees backstop Thurman Munson had established himself as the premier catcher in the American League. His decade-long rivalry with Boston’s Carlton Fisk pushed Munson to higher and higher career accomplishments, culminating in his 1976 season. The summer Munson clobbered AL pitching at a .302 clip and his 105 RBI combined with his clubhouse leadership dragged the Yankees back into the post season after more than ten years absence. Munson hit .435 against the Royals in the ALCS and then a God-like .529 in the World Series. His tremendous output and behind the scenes leadership earned him the 1976 AL Most Valuable Player Award. The next two seasons saw the Yankees cruise to back-to-back World Championships, with Thurman Munson calling the shots from behind the plate.

Munson used this Adirondack 259A model bat during the period when he won the AL MVP through the Yankees back-to-back championships. The bat shows good use with a cracked handle. The barrel shows many ball marks and stitch impressions along with cleat imprints and bat rack paint streaks. Pine tar still clings to the handle and Munson’s feared number “15” is hand written on the knob end in bold black marker along with the weight “33” in faded ink. A complete game used treasure from the Yankees tragic hero, used at the height of his career. This bat comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (1B00311) for the game use and has graded this bat a near-perfect GU 9.
