The first African American superhero in mainstream history, Black Panther first appeared in Fantastic Four #52 in July of 1966 during the Silver Age of Comic Books. Created by legendary Marvel writer-editor Stan Lee and writer-artist Jack Kirby and was inspired by Lee’s desire during the mid-1960s to include more African American characters in Marvel comics during a period of cultural change in America. The series featured T’Challa, the king of the fictional nation of Wakanda, a technologically advanced society located in Africa that is the worlds’ only source of Vibranium, a near-indestructible meteoric ore that is the basis of the wealth and technological advancement of Wakanda. T’Challa gains his superpowers by drinking the essence of a heart-shaped herb cultivated by the Wakandans and given to their chosen protector, the Black Panther. The original comic would have a 15-issue run from January 1977 to May of 1979, with co-creator Jack Kirby returning to the character to draw and write the first 12 issues. This presented item is Black Panther #1, released in January of 1977, and features the Black Panther aiding Abner Little in his quest to recollect a precious artifact that summons the Collectors. In the midst of the fight an ancient time machine is activated and releases Hatch-22, a creature from a time and space unknown. This first issue comic book featuring the Black Panther in his own series comes encapsulated and graded 9.0 with OFF-WHITE to WHITE pages by CGC (0322262005) and is a wonderful specimen for any fans of the Black Panther and Marvel comic books in general.
