We can thank the duo of Cheech & Chong for the genre that has come to be known as “stoner comedy.” Richard "Cheech" Marin and Tommy Chong. The duo found commercial and cultural success in the 1970s and 1980s with their stand-up routines, studio recordings, and feature films. These were based on the hippie and free love era, especially drug and counterculture movements and most notably their love for cannabis. The pair performed stand-up shows, released many successful comedy record albums, and starred in a series of low-budget films. This presented 7 x 7-inch album sleeve is from Cheech and Chong’s “Bloat On” single, released in October of 1977. The song was a parody of the 1977 hit “Float On” by the Floaters and appeared on Cheech and Chong’s “Let’s Make A New Dope Deal” comedy album. The album cover features the comedic duo in disco suits while surrounded by various foods, alluding to the “munchies” the duo would get from smoking too much marijuana. “CHEECH Y CHONG’S” in black appears on the top left corner. “BLOAT ON” and “FEATURING THE BLOATERS” appears in yellow on the top right side of the album sleeve. The iconic duo signed the cover of the sleeve with a black marker. The signatures are bold and clear, and the cover is vibrantly painted but features some stains along the edges and spotted stains throughout. A testament to the power of “stoner comedy” from the 1970s, the item comes with a COA from JSA (S35604) for the signatures.
