Although primarily known as a closer, Dennis Eckersley began his career as an ace starting pitcher with the Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox. The Hall of Famer’s best season as a starter came in 1978, when “Eck” compiled a 20-8 record as the 23-year old ace of the Boston staff. With a miniscule era of 2.99, Eckersley finished fourth in the American League Cy Young Award race.

     This off-white size 44 McAuliffe pullover home jersey was worn by Eckersley during the 1978 Boston Red Sox season. “RED SOX” is sewn across the chest in red-on-navy blue tackle twill. Eckersley’s number “43” is sewn on the back in red-on-navy blue tackle twill. The collar is red and navy. A McAuliffe size “44” tag is sewn on the back inside collar. A “1978” tag is sewn on the bottom front center of the jersey. This jersey shows excellent evidence of game use, especially around the collar and shoulders.
