The 1978 New York Yankees, led by the one-two pitching punch of 20-game-winners Ron Guidry and Ed Figueroa, won 100 games in the regular season. None of these wins were more exciting than the 100th, which came in the 163rd game of the Yankees season. Facing the Boston Red Sox in a one-game playoff to reach the postseason, the Yankees triumphed after slight shortstop Bucky Dent hit a rare home run against Red Sox starter Mike Torrez. In the postseason, the Yanks defeated the Royals in a four game American League Championship Series, setting up a Fall Classic matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Yankees eased to a six game World Series victory, with October hero Bucky Dent earning World Series MVP honors.
