Roberto Duran is widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time. This is a pre-printed one-page, one-sided form from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, an Application for Renewal of Boxer’s License, with black ink on blue paper. The words “Nevada State Athletic Commission” appear in block letters on the top left, while the name of “Robert List, Governor” and the “Seal of the State of Nevada” appear on the top right. The fee for the application is pre-printed as $5. Duran has completed the form in blue ballpoint pen, and it is signed and dated 1-8-80.
Duran, known as “Hands of Stone,” was in training for the first of his four fights in 1980. Duran fought the Norwegian welterweight Joseph Nsubuga on January 13, 1980 at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. He won the bout in the fourth round when Nsubuga “retired” from the fight, boosting his pro record to 70-1 at the time. Duran was a four-weight world champion, having held titles at lightweight (1972–1979), welterweight (1980), light middleweight (1983–1984), and middleweight (1989), as well as reigns as the undisputed and lineal lightweight champion (1978–1979), and the lineal welterweight champion (1980). He was also the second boxer to have competed over a span of five decades, the first being Jack Johnson. This item comes with a PSA/DNA COA (AC83584).
