“Do you believe in miracles? Yes!” In the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics the underdog United States hockey team defeated the mighty squad from the USSR. Immortalized by broadcaster Al Michael’s historic call, the Miracle on Ice is widely regarded as the greatest upset in sports history. The US team was made mainly of college hockey players, who were seemingly no match for the battle tested Soviets. Despite the massive odds against them, the USA prevailed 4-3 and went on to win the gold medal that year by defeating the Finnish team.
This photograph was taken during the medal ceremony, and the athletes on the US team are pictured wearing their blue and white Olympic sweat suits. An American flag, Swedish flag, and USSR flag hang from the rafters. This photograph has been signed by 21 members of the US Olympic delegation, including broadcaster Al Michaels, team captain Mike Eruzione, Jim Craig, Ken Morrow, Dave Silk, Bill Baker, Eric Stobel, Neal Broten, Phil Verchota, Bob Suter, Mark Wells, and several more. The signatures have been written in silver marker. This photograph measures 15 ¼ x 20 inches, and comes in a 22 x 26 inch framed display. This item is accompanied by a LOA from Steve Grad of Beckett Authentication (A86042).
