Thurman Munson was not only a great leader on the field but a great family man. After his shocking death in 1979, his widow Diane Munson hosted an annual dinner in New York to raise money for "The Association for the Help of Retarded Children." This is the largest organization of its kind, serving over 11,000 children and adults who have certain disabilities. Past winners of the award include Jason Kidd, Mariano Rivera, Walt Frazier, Muhammad Ali, Willie Mays and Joe Torre. This “Thurman Award” is cast in bronze with Munson’s likeness flanked by two generic athletes' uniform. Cast out of bronze, the award measures a sturdy 13 x 11 inches, and weighs a whopping 20 pounds. The reverse has two small areas where it appears this award was previously affixed to a large plaque. Very unique Thurman Munson award, used to honor this great player and man.
