Wade Boggs made his MLB debut in 1982, hitting a lofty .349 in 104 games with the Boston Red Sox. In only 338 at bats, Boggs collected five homers, 44 RBI, and 35 walks against only 21 strikeouts for a rapidly improving Red Sox nine. In the field, Boggs split time between first and third base, starting 44 games at first compared to 39 at third. The future full-time third baseman showed his skills with the glove throughout the year, committing only three errors at first base for an impeccable .994 fielding percentage. Boggs’ range factor per nine innings was a sterling 10.84, nearly a full point above the league average for first basemen. While Boggs was a standout at first, the future Hall of Famer made his bones at the hot corner over the remainder of his exceptional 18-season career.
Offered in this lot is a rare 1982 Wade Boggs game used first baseman’s glove. This Rawlings Pro 1B glove has a Rawlings tag sewn on the wrist and a circular Rawlings logo on the back of the thumb slot. “Boggs” is written in bold black marker on the back of the thumb. Boggs has signed the thumb area in black marker, inscribing “Game Used 82 Red Sox” and “Rookie Year” in addition to his signature. This glove comes with a LOA signed by Wade Boggs himself.
