In 1986, Julius Erving could look back on a career that saw him emerge as the best player to come out of the upstart ABA and then go on to revolutionize the sport by taking the game above the rim and creating basketball as we know it today. Erving was a three-time ABA MVP, NBA MVP in 1981, and an 11-time All-Star. In time he would be named to both the NBA’s 35th and 50th Anniversary teams as one of the greatest players the game had ever seen. In his final NBA season as he took his final tour of the league, Dr. J was honored at every stop by his long-time opponents who put aside their rivalries and paid tribute to the greatest player of their generation.
Dr. J’s red mesh road jersey that is offered here was worn by the legend during his last two seasons in the league (1984-86). This jersey has “SIXERS” and Erving’s number “6” on the front in blue and white tackle twill. The sleeve and neck openings are trimmed in red, white and blue ribbing and a Wilson size 40 label is sewn in the lower left front tail. The back of the jersey has “ERVING” in white tackle twill sewn directly to the jersey above his number “6” in blue and white tackle twill. The jersey shows moderate game use with some puckering to the tackle twill, particularly on the front. There is some toning to the white tackle twill and loose threads throughout. This jersey comes with LOA from MEARS (315196) for the game use and has been graded a perfect A10.
