Michael Jordan had one of the greatest rookie years in basketball history, averaging over 28 points per game and leading the Bulls to a record 11 games better than their mark the previous year. Great things were expected of the 1984-85 Rookie of the Year in his sophomore season, but a foot injury three games into the season put those plans on hold. While he acquitted himself well in the games he did play, the recuperating MJ devoted his time and resources to community service in his adopted city of Chicago.
The NBA Players Association took notice of Jordan’s good work, and awarded him the 1985-86 J. Patrick Foley Community Service Award, also known as the HA-LO Award. The award is shaped like a basketball on a stand and is made of clear glass. The basketball has a diameter of 12 inches, and the entire trophy measures roughly 19 inches tall. The trophy also features an engraved NBA Players Association logo and a stylized HA-LO logo. “J. Patrick Foley Community Service Award 1985-1986” and “Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls” are engraved near the base of the trophy.
