The “Showtime” Lakers won 62 regular-season games then cruised through the Western Conference playoffs, going a combined 11-2, with series victories over the Phoenix Suns, Portland Trail Blazers and Denver Nuggets. This set up a meeting with the rival Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals, which the Lakers would win, four games to two, to earn the NBA title. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar averaged 22.0 points per game during the season, Magic Johnson put up averages of 18.3 points and 12.6 assists, while James Worthy posted a scoring average of 17.6 PPG.
