After a year of playing out of position at first base, 1986 saw Mike Schmidt back home at third base. The Phillies star responded to the familiar surroundings by having one of his greatest offensive seasons, slamming a league-leading 37 home runs and 119 runs batted in. Schmidt also led the league in slugging and took home the Silver Slugger Award, a Gold Glove Award for his fielding and was voted to the All-Star Game. By the time the season ended, Schmidt was just a few home runs shy of the 500 Home Run Club, a goal he reached during the first month of the 1987 season. Schmidt’s 1986 stats earned him his third and final NL MVP Award, something no other third baseman had done before or since.

To commemorate his tremendous season, the Nike corporation presented Schmidt with its own MVP Award in the shape of this gold (colored) dipped baseball shoe - an actual Nike baseball cleat covered in metallic gold sitting 10 inches high atop a 14-inch long wooden base. A metallic gold nameplate reading “NIKE 1986 MVP AWARD.” The award shows light wear with some surface scuffs and dings from display and age. This one-of-a-kind trophy is the original award presented to Schmidt.
