The New York Mets brought Kevin Elster up to majors at the end of the 1986 season as a backup to sweet-fielding but light-hitting shortstop Rafael Santana. Elster got into 19 games and did allow Santana to catch his breath during the late season pennant drive as the Mets surged to their first pennant in over a decade. The rookie got into four playoff games and took the field in the 6th inning of the pivotal Game 6. Elster faced Roger Clemens in his only at bat, flying out to center field in the bottom of the 7th. The shortstop would go on to become the Mets starting shortstop, and an instrumental part of their 1988 pennant run. As a nod to his modest part in the Mets 1986 championship season, Kevin Elster was presented with this World Series Championship trophy. The trophy features 26 gold painted flags, representing each team in the American and National League, surrounding a silver baseball and golden ring mounted by a gold championship crown. The 23-inch diameter black wooden base has both Red Sox and Mets World Series Press Pins and features a gold band emblazoned with “World Series Champions New York Mets 1986 Kevin Elster” in black. This trophy comes with a LOA from Kevin Elster.
