Arguably the most celebrated sports event in Chicago history, this is the first jersey worn in Super Bowl XX that has been consigned to Goldin Auctions. Steve “Mongo” McMichael was a 2x Pro Bowler, 2x First-team All-Pro, 3x Second Team All-Pro, member of Pro Football Weekly’s 1980’s All-Decade Team, and was named as one of the “100 Greatest Bears” of all time. This historic jersey was worn in the Chicago Bears’ 46-10 destruction of the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX on January 26, 1986, and the listing photos depict McMichael carrying Coach Mike Ditka off the field wearing this jersey after that victory.

Offered here is the very Wilson jersey worn by Chicago Bears left defensive tackle Steve McMichael during Super Bowl XX. McMichael had one of the record-setting seven sacks recorded by the Bears that night at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. This white mesh Bears jersey displays heavy game use with staining throughout, including soiling, abrasion marks, team repairs and paint stains. McMichael’s number “76” is screen-printed on the front, back and sleeves in navy and orange. Each sleeve has three stripes, navy/orange/navy, with the left sleeve having “GSH” in the middle of the stripes for former Bears owner and founder George Halas. The back has “McMICHAEL” screen-printed in navy and orange on a matching white mesh nameplate. Bears jerseys from their historic Super Bowl XX victory are hard to come by and this jersey has been photo matched by Resolution Photomatching, whose ironclad photo match game used authentication to the historic Super Bowl XX game on January 26, 1986 in which McMichael registered a sack. Resolution Photomatching has also conclusively photo match authenticated the jersey to being game used on September 19, 1985 (Week 3 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the 1985 season) and January 6, 1985 (NFC Championship Game from 1984 season in which McMichael registered a half-sack). Conclusive photo matches were made based on the alignment of the mesh holes with the custom screened numbers, marks on the custom screened numbers, and repairs on the front of the jersey. This also includes an original signed Letter of Authenticity from McMichael further authenticating the jersey as game used in Super Bowl XX. McMichael’s signature on the LOA comes with a COA from Beckett Authentication (E23019).

The jersey was framed and displayed by McMichael which resulted in frame matte stain lines on the jersey as shown in listing photos. The jersey comes with the original display plate that McMichael included in the jersey frame. Note also that staining on the right shoulder and into the “EL” portion of the name on the rear of the jersey is original to the jersey as shown in the listing photo showing the jersey as framed by McMichael and also a post-game image showing staining on the right shoulder.
