Kirk Gibson batted .290 with 25 home runs, 106 runs scored and 31 stolen bases. On the mound, Orel Hershiser was phenomenal, posting a 23-8 record with a 2.26 ERA. The Dodgers defeated the New York Mets, four games to three, in the NLCS to reach the Fall Classic. Los Angeles would then go on to beat the heavily favored Oakland A’s in five games in a World Series famously known for Gibson’s Game 1 walk-off home run off of ace closer and Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley.
