Oakland Athletics superstar Rickey Henderson wore this gray A’s road jersey during the 1989 World Series. The A’s were matched up against their cross-bay rivals, the San Francisco Giants, in a World Series interrupted for 10 days by the infamous and deadly Loma Prieta earthquake that occurred mere minutes before the start of Game 3. Despite this act of God, the A’s swept the World Series in four games over a two-week period. Henderson, the 1989 American League Championship Series MVP, took on a starring role for the A’s in the Fall Classic, hitting .474 with a home run, two triples, three RBI, and three stolen bases. Henderson began the 1989 season with the New York Yankees, but a mid-June trade sent the speedy leadoff man back to the Bay for the remainder of the season.

This button-down road jersey has “Oakland” sewn across the chest in green and yellow tackle twill. Henderson’s number “24” is sewn on the chest and back in green and yellow tackle twill. “HENDERSON” is sewn across the back shoulders in green tackle twill over a matching gray nameplate. An A’s logo patch and a black memorial armband for Bart Giamatti are sewn on the left sleeve. A 1989 World Series patch is sewn on the right sleeve above a green Rawlings wordmark. A Rawlings size “46” tag is sewn on the inside front tail. A “Set 1 1989” flag is attached to the Rawlings tag. This jersey shows moderate evidence of game use.

Henderson’s quarter button-down long-sleeved undershirt is also included in this lot. The shirt has a white body with green sleeves, and “A’s” sewn on the chest in green and yellow tackle twill. Henderson’s number “24” is written on the back outside collar in black marker. A LOA from noted game used jersey expert Dave Miedema accompanies this lot.
