So much of legendary overachieving quarterback Doug Flutie’s life and career seemed to unfold in storybook fashion. Flutie’s first signature moment would have to be his famous “Hail Mary” touchdown pass for Boston College against Miami on November 23, 1984 which is still regarded as one of the greatest in college football history. Originally drafted by the Los Angeles Rams with the 285th overall pick of the 1985 draft the lowest ever for a Heisman Award winner, Flutie opted out and signed with the New Jersey Generals of the recently formed United States Football League. A year later he signed with the Chicago Bears and later played for the New England Patriots and although his brief stint in the NFL did not pan out as planned his career was resurrected in the Canadian Football League where he threw for a record 6,619 yards in his second season with the BC Lions in 1991 parlaying his success into a million dollar contract with the Calgary Stampeders. In his first season in Calgary Flutie led the Stampeders to the CFL’s 1992 Grey Cup championship winning the game’s MVP award with a remarkable 480-yard, two touchdown performance in Calgary’s 24-10 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Fourteen years later Flutie was named the greatest player in the history of the CFL and is the first non-Canadian to be inducted to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. This 14” miniature scale model Grey Cup trophy is engraved with “Doug Flutie M.V.P. 1992” and serves as a reminder of his remarkable career.
