Presented is an engraved cigar box presented to Lee Smith by the 1993 New York Yankees in honor of his 400th career save. The 2 x 5 x 7 inch tin cigar box has the legend “To Lee Smith In Recognition of Your 400th Major League Save September 17th, 1993 vs. Boston Red Sox We Salute You The New York Yankees” engraved on the lid, alongside a gold metal New York Yankees cap, bat and ball attached to the lid. The interior is wood-lined. There is some minor denting to the front of the lid. Smith was a late-season acquisition for the Yankees in September 1993, and in eight games, Smith did not allow a single run and picked up three saves and 11 strikeouts, including his 400th career save on Sept. 17, 1993 against the Red Sox (New York 5, Boston 4 at Yankee Stadium). Smith played 18 seasons in the Majors, and was considered one of the dominant closers in baseball history, holding the MLB record for career saves (478) from 1993 until 2006. This item is accompanied by a LOA from Smith.
