The United States hosted the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 1994, drawing over 3.5 million fans to games played across the United States. The United States did well enough to advance from the knockout stage, only to fall 1-0 to eventual champions Brazil in a thrilling Round of 16 contest. Brazil defeated the Netherlands and Sweden to reach the finals against Italy, echoing the 1970 World Cup Final. In the end, penalties decided the day at the Rose Bowl, with consecutive misses from Roberto Baggio and Daniele Massaro granting Brazil their historic fourth World Cup title. Bulgaria’s Hristo Stoichkov and Russia’s Oleg Salenko tied for the Golden Boot with six goals apiece, while Brazil’s rampant striker Romario earned the tournament Golden Ball.
