To most basketball fans, Michael Jordan’s 1994 retirement and announcement that he would embark on a career in baseball came as a shock. However, to those who knew the basketball star could tell you that it was Jordan’s childhood dream to play big league baseball. Signed by the Chicago White Sox, Jordan joined the Double-A Birmingham Barons where he hit .202 with 51 RBI and 30 stolen bases in 127 games. Not bad for a man who had not seriously played the game since his Little League years.
Game used items for Jordan’s brief baseball career are much sought after. And while there are several game worn Barons jerseys in the hobby, this is a gamer from the parent club. The gray road jersey has “Chicago” across the chest in black and white tackle twill with Jordan’s iconic number “45” below in the same colors. The left front tail has the Russell Athletic label with a “45-46” strip tag sewn below. The left sleeve carries the diamond-shaped White Sox patch while the right has the MLB’s 125th Anniversary patch above a Russell logo. The back has “JORDAN” arched above his number “45” in white and black tackle twill. The jersey shows good wear with some light staining and toning throughout. There are some loose threads, particularly on the tackle twill which sows puckering from wear and laundering. The ultimate game worn piece from Jordan’s famous sojourn into professional baseball. The jersey comes with a LOA from Sports Investors Authentication for the game use.
